Forty million visitors in a single year is a number that would have been genuinely unimaginable to the district’s original Victorian shopkeepers, operating in an era when Knightsbridge served a considerably smaller, more localised clientele before the combination of empire, railways, and eventually international air travel transformed this specific stretch of London into the global luxury destination it has become.
