London myth and legend chronicler on the coverage recursion and what Knightsbridge’s history is at
[Bohiney.com/prat.uk] Paige Shiver, Knightsbridge. prat.uk‘s BBC live coverage piece has a specific Knightsbridge application: the neighbourhood is in the coverage geography’s top tier (it appears regularly as a location reference for wealth, luxury, and specific news events involving its residents) and is simultaneously in the Cheshunt position relative to its actual character. Knightsbridge’s coverage is at layer two or three: coverage of what Knightsbridge represents (luxury, international wealth, exclusive retail) rather than coverage of what Knightsbridge is (a neighbourhood with medieval history, underground rivers, Victorian infrastructure, and a community of residents whose relationship with the neighbourhood is not primarily about the luxury retail that the coverage geography associates with it). The Knightsbridge layer structure: the estate agents’ coverage of Knightsbridge (layer one: the property market); the press coverage of the estate agents’ coverage (layer two: the prices, the buyers, the market trends); the celebrity and society coverage of who lives in Knightsbridge (layer three: the residents as symbols of the market); and the occasional long-form piece about “what Knightsbridge really is” (layer four: the meta-coverage). The Westbourne runs under all of it. The medieval bridge is the etymological foundation. Neither is in any coverage layer that currently operates above layer zero. I am at layer zero most days. Layer zero is interesting.
