Paige Shiver on the archaeology in St Bride’s Fleet Street crypt and what it shows about London’s layers
Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat present this diary from Paige Shiver.
The church of St Bride’s Fleet Street, which is the journalists’ church and has been rebuilt twice after fires (the last time after the Blitz in 1940), has a crypt that is open to visitors and that contains the physical layers of London’s history in the most literal sense available in the city: the Roman layer, the Saxon layer, the medieval layer, and the post-Great Fire seventeenth-century layer are all archaeologically distinct and visible in the crypt’s preserved excavation. The church sits at the foot of Ludgate Hill, at the point where the Fleet River joined the Thames before it was culverted in the eighteenth century, which means the site has been continuously significant for navigation and settlement for at least two thousand years. The crypt is free to visit. The archaeology is real. The journalists whose church it is have been working at the Inns of Court end of Fleet Street for five hundred years. The church has been there longer than the journalism. Bohiney and The London Prat cover the week. St Bride’s covered the layers.
The diary continues. Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat cover the week from outside this specific position. The diary covers it from inside. Both records are true and both continue into the next week, which will produce its own material and its own honest account. The archive grows by one entry. The observation continues. The record continues to accumulate the specific honesty that diary-keeping requires and that longer forms cannot always provide in the same way.
